Native to Africa, this is largest of the cobra species and a very alert and dangerous specimen. It assumes the typical cobra warning stance and its bite is a life-threatening emergency. Death can occur between 30 minutes and 2 hours and symptoms start drowsiness, limb paralysis, hearing loss, abdominal pain, and other neurological and respiratory symptoms. On the upside, an encounter with the Forest Cobra is quite rare due its forest-dwelling habits but it ranks as the 4th most venomous species.
