I’m a level 2 freelancer at Fiverr and I’ve earned about $2,000 over the years (I’ll show you my earnings page in this review). It’s not a lot of money and I haven’t completed nearly as many gigs as some Fiverr freelancers, but I do have experience with them.

Fiverr is an online marketplace that connects clients with freelancers (or freelancers with clients… whichever you prefer).
Co-founded in 2009 by Micha Kaufman and Shai Wininger, they officially launched Fiverr in 2010.
Their goal was to become the world’s largest marketplace for digital services, and today, if not the biggest, they’re certainly one of them alongside competing platforms like Upwork and Freelancer.
According to Wikipedia, Fiverr is one of the Top 100 US sites in and Top 200 in the world. That’s not just freelancing sites… that’s all websites!
You probably know, but their name Fiverr is of course because they originally charged $5 per service (or in Fiverr speak… per gig).
When I worked at Fiverr, all gigs were bought and sold at $5. The platform, a community of buyers and sellers, allows you to be a seller and a buyer at the same time (with only one account).
I was a seller (99.99% of the time). But it was also convenient (as a buyer) to find some services I needed too.
Fiverr has evolved throughout the years though, and by 2015, freelancers were given free rein to charge more than $5 (now a gig can cost up to thousands of dollars). Of course, this change made a lot of existing freelancers happy and attracted many new ones, because most digital services are worth far more than $5.

However, that doesn’t mean there is no controversy surrounding Fiverr.
While Fiverr itself is not a scam, there are scammers who exploit their platform.
There have also been legal actions against Fiverr freelancers for some services that were being sold, like fake reviews.
